The Story Behind “It Is Well with My Soul”

In Christian hymn history, few songs touch hearts, such as “It Is Well with My Soul.” Horatio Spafford wrote this hymn in the late 1800s. It shows strong faith and toughness during awful times. The events leading to its creation involve heartbreak, hope, and rock-solid trust in God’s control.

The Life of Horatio Spafford
Horatio Gates Spafford worked as a well-known lawyer and businessman in Chicago. He entered the world on October 20, 1828, in North Troy, New York. Spafford believed in Christianity and shared a close friendship with the famous preacher Dwight L. Moody. People knew him for his strong faith, kindness, and dedication to the church.
Yet, Spafford’s life took a turn filled with heartbreaking events that would push his faith to its limits. In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire tore through the city wiping out many of Spafford’s property investments. Even after this huge money loss, Spafford’s belief stayed strong.
The Tragedy at Sea
In 1873, Spafford planned a European trip for his family to take a break from their money troubles. He wanted to meet Moody during one of his preaching tours in England. Because of some business issues that came up at the last minute, Spafford sent his wife Anna, and their four daughters—Annie, Maggie, Bessie, and Tanetta—ahead on the SS Ville du Havre. He planned to join them soon after the SS Ville du Havre never made it to its final stop. On November 22, 1873, the ship crashed into the British iron clipper Loch Earn in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. In just twelve minutes, the Ville du Havre went under the waves taking the lives of 226 passengers, including Spafford’s four daughters.
Anna Spafford survived the wreck against all odds. When she got to Cardiff Wales, she sent a telegram to her husband with the heart-wrenching words: “Saved alone. What shall I do?”
A Hymn of Faith
Heartbroken, Spafford sailed to England to join his grieving wife. As his ship crossed near where his daughters had died, he felt moved to write the words that would turn into the cherished hymn “It Is Well with My Soul.” The words show a deep sense of calm and faith in God’s plan even in the face of overwhelming sadness.
